Interview with Working Writers

You self-published your first book with iUniverse. Why did you choose to go that route and how did that lead to the book contract for your following titles?

I chose to self-publish for a few reasons. First, since so many people were following me on YouTube, and I talk about whatever I want, they knew I was writing and asked about it a lot. I wanted to share my story with the handful of people who I knew wanted it. Second, the whole querying thing didn’t work out the first time around. Either it was timing or my book starting slow or maybe just not being ready, but no one felt like they could sell it, so I just did it on my own. It was a really good learning experience for me, but I’m not sure it helped me land an agent when I decided to query The Selection (which is slated to come out Summer 2012. Mark your calendars. Save your pennies). I think Elana (my agent) appreciated the experience, but wasn’t impressed. I think most agents will feel similarly.

Writer's Digest: The Story of Kiera Cass

For your second novel, The Selection, you were able to get 2 agents to ask to represent it. You've chalked this up to timing. Aside from this, do you think The Selection is a better book? (Did you get better at it the second time around?) Or do you think it's more commercially viable than The Siren?

The Selection is different, that's for sure. The first four chapters of The Siren are things I feel must be a part of the book. Kahlen spends a whole lot of time waiting for things to happen, and I wanted people to wait with her, to feel it. But I know that if an agent asks for the first three chapters … they're wondering where the guy is and how this whole thing's going to work out, and I get why that was probably not interesting for them. Still wouldn't change it.

But, yes, The Selection is better. I took more time to plan it out and write it, whereas The Siren was me writing a chapter and then asking "Well, what happens next?"

I feel like the people in The Selection are a bit more real, and I think it is more commercial. It's the kind of book that will make you want to design your own T-shirts. I've imagined the themed book release parties that I genuinely hope to have someday, and my best friend is already dreaming up parodies. I think it'll be a fun book to read, and I really hope the fandom enjoys it.

Blast from the Past

I was on Google earlier today and found this. It's an article about how Kiera gave out hugs to people in Blacksburg after the Virginia Tech shootings. Oh Kiera... Why do you have to be so nice and selfless?

Just another reason why I love Kiera Cass!

Hello!

Hi!
I'm just warning anybody that reads this now, that the first couple of posts might be awkward. I'm new to this blogging thing, so just bear with me.

Anyways, I became a fan of Kiera (And Liz!) after I heard about TwiCurls from NoMoreMarbles and Kaleb Nation. I immediately subscribed to Kiera's channel too and I'm still excited when I see one of her videos in my subscription box!

I also read The Siren, about a month ago and I became one of my favorite books of all time. The book is now circulating around my group of friends and each one tells me that it is an amazing book.
